Rotary Revitalisation Pilot
The RI Board has recently approved a four year pilot for the 1300 clubs in Zone 8 (Australia, New Zealand
and the South Pacific). An accompanying enactment to allow this Zone, and Rotary International British
Isles (2 Zones) to proceed, will be debated at this month’s Council on Legislation. At the present time RI
allows for 1000 pilots at any one time and the CoL enactment will allow this to be increased so all clubs in
Zone 8 can take part.
The main reasons for the pilot is
• the rapid loss of membership in the Zone (25% over 10 years) which the majority of districts have
been unable to reverse
• to highlight and strengthen our ‘hands on’ egalitarian approach to Rotary in this region where active
fun-based participatory service delivery has always been more important than just raising money to
do good in the world
After the CoL decision, D 9510 will arrange presentations to clubs on the details of the pilot. It is proposed
initially that presentations will be made at District Assembly on May 1 and then at Area meetings of
Rotarians from the member clubs. Where possible these meetings will be in person. After that interested
clubs that would like a special presentation to their club can request a presentation.
The purpose of the pilot is two-fold:
• To create more dynamic clubs by providing specialist help with membership growth or other means
to enable clubs to function with less administration and lower member costs,
• To set up a regional administration that is more sensitive to our ‘down under culture’ and to transfer
progressively district functions to the regional body. Initially this will include better training for club
leaders and prospective leaders (like Rotaract does) and mounting public image campaigns that are
focused on our natural media markets rather than the artificial district boundaries.
Districts and their administrations will continue during the pilot but their roles will be expected to change
over time as the various pilots are tried and evaluated.
