Rotary Club of GAWLER LIGHT
Activity Type: General
Activity Description: Cambodia Village Chicken Social Project
Activity Location: Siem Reap Provence Khna Po Village Cambodia
The funding supplied by the Rotary Club of Gawler Light will
assist Cambodia village farmers, Mr and Mrs Sokum, to
build a new shed on his Titled land to house five hundred of
one-day-old chickens, enabling them to grow to market-
weight for sale.
Mr Sokum is contracted to KJC Training Centre, a Social
Business supporting the training and mentoring of the
grower on how to be a successful chicken farmer and
committed to visiting them weekly to ensure their success
through teaching the necessary husbandry skills.
KJC Training Centre provides the day-old chicks and feed on
assignment to the farmer with the agreement that it will buy
back the fully grown chickens at an agreed price, which takes
into account the cost of the chicks and feed. The birds are
sold for meat chickens into Cambodia.
This sustainable income-generating project ensures food
security for the most deprived rural families. The World
Bank has stated that in Cambodia, poverty throughout the
rural communities has increased, with forty-six percent of
the population now living with a income of under
$3.00US per day.
Through this project, the Sokum’s farm will enable them to
double their income thus helping them to improve their
children’s schooling by suppling their uniforms and
education fees, assisting with further education for his older
son who has a dream to study at University, and being able
to purchase healthier nutritional food for the family,
supporting their wellbeing.
When the project was completed at the end of April the
support team had a hand over and asked Mr and Mrs
Sokum how they were feeling about the new chicken farm.
Their response was in Khmer, translated to English:
“We are most thankful that there are kind people in the
world. A Big thanks for the Rotary club for their kind
donation and is most excited about getting a chance to
make some extra money to help my family to live a better
life and be successful, and teach others.”
