Activity Type: Food / Agriculture General
Activity Description: Greenhouse Support for Sustainable Living
Activity Location: Philippines—Sitio Irung, Tabun, Mabalacat City, Luzon.
The rural indigenous community of Sitio Irung is benefiting from
the construction of a greenhouse.
Port Pirie Rotary (D9500) supported the Rotary Club of Dau in District 3790
to undertake the construction of the greenhouse with the assistance of the Sitio
Irung Rotary Community Corps. The host club (RC of Dau) which has a strong
relationship with the community was asked for assistance to improve the
agricultural productivity of the community. The people needed a facility to be
able to grow a variety of seedlings for the improvement of the production of
vegetables and crops, and for the community to establish a sustainable
propagation program to support their livelihood.
With the assistance of the community, the Rotary Community Corps prepared
the site for the construction of the greenhouse. The land is community owned.
The work was carried out under the supervision of Dau Rotary members.
During the period of 14 November to 22 December, 2019 materials were
purchased, the location cleared, preparation work commenced, installation
completed, the debris removed, the site cleaned and the final project handed
over to the community.
Footnote: 27 June: “Our farmers have already harvested a hundred twenty
kilograms (120kg) of eggplant and we have already sown squash and string
beans vegetable seedlings inside the greenhouse to be transferred outside of
the greenhouse as our Take-Off Project on 1 July. We also like to inform you
that the Greenhouse Project will be turned over to the community.” Rotary
