Tables turned at Waikerie

Most Australia Day events in 2022 were cancelled or scaled back and many Rotary clubs missed their
opportunity of being involved.

However at Waikerie that tables were turned. This year the Waikerie Australia Day committee decided to
cook the BBQ and invited the Rotary Club members as the guests of honour!

They enjoyed a cooked breakfast at the Waikerie Football Club. Bacon, eggs, toast and champagne to
recognise and thank the Rotary Club of Waikerie for their continued service to the town. The Rotary Club
of Waikerie also held their annual Australia Day flag raising ceremony in the middle of the town’s main
roundabout with 40 Rotarians & guests in attendance.

PDG Ian Oliver had the honour of raising the flag this year and explained the history behind this annual
event. The flagpole was erected as a Rotary project to commemorate 100 years of Rotary International in
2005. Incidentally The Rotary Centenary Flag was raised on the 23rd February 2005. For the past 17 years,
the club has made the raising of the Australian Flag an annual tradition with Rotarians gathering on the
roundabout to the entrance of Waikerie and making a toast.
