Trees for Life
The RC Flagstaff Hill is in its 3rd year as a contracted grower for the Trees for Life program.
Every year it plants 600 tubes of native trees and shrubs.
The RC Morphett Vale has joined in this year too.
The RC Walkerville has also had a long-standing program
in conjunction with the Walkerville Council, specifically
to revegetate the Linear Park on the River Torrens.
It is a simple way to help with the revegetation of rural
Australia. The seeds are planted in November, grown to
the following April before being planted out in their
permanent location. Once planted all that is required is
daily watering. Flagstaff Hill grows its tubes under a pergola, in polystyrene vegetable containers placed on
an old screen door frame.
The Flagstaff Hill trees are grown for farmers. This year’s
seedlings are going to a SE farmer between Kingston SE
and Lucindale. They have been carefully selected to suit
the soils and climate of that farm.
The interest in trees amongst the 12 club members has
been ongoing and the club has planted trees in national
parks and the residential development at Glenthorne
Farm where the whole community was involved.
