NYSF 2020 YEAR 12 PROGRAM

Excited Year 12 students gathered in January
to participate in the ten-day residential
     program at Australian National University
     (ANU), Canberra or Queensland University
     (QU), Brisbane.
The program is designed to give some six hundred students
Australia-wide, and chosen by Rotary, a broader understanding of
the diverse study and career options available in science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to
encourage continued studies in these fields.
The NYSF is run by youth for youth. Those who attended QU
(Session B) were able to enjoy the full ten days of the program to:

 visit science and technology related laboratories and facilities,
      go on site tours
At the Governor’s Reception for NYSF Students
      listen to lectures
His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC and Mrs Lan Le
      take part in workshops
      go to social events
 participate in group activities that improve communication and
        presentation skills.
Session A at ANU only ran for five out of the ten days in Canberra.
Due to the bushfires, the air quality deteriorated and eventually the
group could not go outside, plus there were power outages. The
students were resilient, set up group chats and now message each
     other.
D9500/9520 NYSF Co-ordinator Margaret Northcote and
photographer Jon Harmer met the SA contingent at Adelaide
airport and noted that the students were not upset, claiming they
had an amazing time. The parents at the airport were full of praise
for NYSF administration with their handling of the tragedy.
The bushfires meant that Session C was cancelled altogether and
Rotary clubs and parents having been contacted regarding
     reimbursement of fees.
As with many organisations, the financial implications of the
national bushfire disaster on NYSF have been devastating and the
organisation is grateful to those Rotary clubs which have chosen to
donate part or all of the fees they had committed to the 2020 DG Jane Owens flanked by David Owens and
     program. Mrs Lan Le
Watch out for information about the 2021 program
coming to you in District Bizz very soon.
